Felt pretty good tonight. Foot feeling pretty good, and I actually felt pretty fluid. I will stay treadmill bound for a little while until I have confidence in my ability to run pain free outdoors.

Ok, back at it today.  Another solid 5 miles on the treadmill.  Felt pretty good today, foot not too tender and legs moved comfortably today.  I will gradually add some mileage in the upcoming weeks, but for now this feels pretty good.  I don't even mind running on the mill right now!!!

Although not complete yet, my personal and business blog sight is now active. I am not sure how diligent I will be in updating it, but it should contain more personal insights not only into the world of fitness (my profession), but into my philosophies on life in general. Anywho.....

http://sbrowningpt.blogspot.com/

I will post my run shortly - haven't quite made it out the door yet. I have to say, Adam ran by the house this morning in the middle of the storm, the guilt is now overwhelming - thanks Adam, now I really don't have an excuse not to run!!!

5 miles on the treadmill, a very nice run, just relaxed and enjoyed some great tunes and dreamt of far away places. There are so many more places to see, I just want to visit them all!!

I noticed the short hair too and was wondering if they are older pictures? Looks good either way.

Scott,

It was great having a chance to talk to you again. It seems like it has been forever. Especially considering we live less than two blocks a part. A lot of my weekly mileage has been from work but with the empty house I would be interested in running some evening miles if you wanted to brave the weather sometime this week. Let me know. Any distance is fine.

Another solid 5 on the treadmill today.  I was a little sluggish getting started but eased into a pretty good run.  Gradually progression again, felt good, will need to ice down to make sure the swelling stays under control.

Well another solid 5 on the treadmill.  Man was I tempted to go outside, soon enough.  Pace was a little more brisk today, with a couple 6:30 miles - I know flying, but it is a start.

Made an attempt at 10x1 min reps today to see if the foot would tolerate anything faster.  It was ok during the set, but man it was completely unhappy after, wow!!  Anyway, it is worth expermenting at this point.  I will ice it down throughout the day and get it back under control.  The reps felt fast and I felt very a lot out of synch, but that will come.

Well, I attempted to run three faster miles today on the treadmill. and to some blog had some success.  I warm-up 2 and then ran a 5:56, and then was about comput.  I ran the next around 6:20, short recovery and then the last in 5:52.  I am in pathetic shape right now, I guess 20 miles a week (on a good week) is not going  to do it.  I can dream....

First time outside in a month.  The foot was not very happy from yesterday, but certainly tolerable.  I can tell you, the ground is certainly less forgiving than the treadmill.  I might actually be a little sore tomorrow!!  Funny!!  Anyway, I may get out again tomorrow if the weather is nice, I might even shoot for 6 - pathetic!!!!

What's up with the foot, is it PF?

From S browning on Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 17:00:02

Hi James!!

I think I could dream about having PF. No it is calcaneal bursitis, I have had it for many years now, but it is pretty rough right now. I am doing a lot of rehab exercises right now, but it basically stemmed from not treating it early on and continuing to pound it. I am actually going to take another few weeks off the run and focus of more intense rehab protocols. Thanks for asking.

From James on Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 17:09:30

I have never had bursitis before, but hear it is painful. I did have a neuroma in my left foot about 4 years ago that put me on crutches for a week and out of running for about 6 months. That was painful!

Good luck with that, hopefully the rest and rehab will bring you back sooner than you hope.

Alright, I have decided to take at least the next couple weeks off from running.  The foot is not good and I want to clear this problem up for good.  I have battled it for almost 6 years and I want to be done with it.  I will continue to cross train heavily and maintain some level of fitness, and I will engage in aggressive rehab.

Today I spent 2 hours cross country skiing with Michelle at Snow Basin, it was amazing.  Beautiful sun, and the snow was fantastic.  This is the first time out this year on the cc skis and I really had a blast.

2000 yards in the pool. I swam harder today than yesterday, not saying much, but it was some work.  My arms are not quite conditioned yet, but that should change in a couple weeks.  The foot feels good today, the rest is helping, I am working hard to fix this problem.

Another 1400 in the pool, not that impressive, but literally all I had time for.  My arms are pretty fatigued from the last few days, but they will condition soon and I will add some more yardage.  The pool was super chlorinated today, yuck!

1700 yards in the pool today. I warmed up 400 yards with flippers on, what a blast, man can you fly with those on!!  I actually tried an 800 for time today, inspired by another FRB tri guy.  I do not know the last time I swam anything for time, but I figured it would interesting.  I thought if I could swim sub 1:30 per 100 I would be happy.  I averaged just under 1:30 with an 11:40 something 800.  I did not think that was too bad considering I have only been in the water 4 days.  It was a pretty far cry from many moons ago, but surprisingly better than I thought it would be.  The effort level was not hard, certainly not all out, if I tried an all out effort I would not have made  800 yards.  Anyway, an ok swim, and the foot felt ok, still not pain free, but better.

Another day at the pool. Swam a continuous 1000 for the first time in forever. I actually felt very comfortable, tried not to push to hard. After a full week of swimming, I actually feel pretty good, I will up the yardage next week. I miss running, but I miss running pain free even more. I am continuing with the rehab sets, and Michelle is giving me daily deep tissue massage. I think things are improving, I will wait another week and see how I feel. 1500 yards total.

After a horrendous nights sleep due to a wrong number called, I managed to make it to the pool.  Swam 2600 yards today broken into sets of 5x400, with a couple easy kick sets and a 200 IM.  My arms were pretty cooked at the end, my lats are pretty beat up too.  I did not feel as strong today, but that could just be 7 days in a row of a new sport.

From S Browning on Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 23:19:36

Hi James,

It is getting better, I think this is going to take a while, there is still some swelling, but mostly it feels ok as long as I don't run. Have you relocated to the SL valley yet. It will be fun to have you out this direction, I look forward to doing some running together.

I actually found a house in American Fork, so it is only 15 miles to work. Glad you feeling better. I think you are playing it smart by taking your time with your injury.

Alright, 2000 yards in the pool this evening.  A better workout tonight, primary set was a 5x200 on the the 3 minute.  I was coming in on the 2:40, 2:45 range.  These felt ok, although a little slower than I would have liked.  Did a bunch of butterfly too, I wonder if my arms were even coming out of the water!!!!

2500 yards in the pool today, did 5 x 200 for a main set, did these on the 3:00, coming to the wall about 2:40.  I also did a hard kick set with fins, torched my ankles, but in a demented way it actually felt pretty good.  Finished with a 50 for time, the first I have done in many moons.  I watched an older gentleman do one so I was inspired. Swimming the 50 is a lot like running a 200, go until you die, it is fun though. I came in around 25 seconds, which is a far cry from my best, but it was not a meet, and I have only been swimming 2 weeks. Who knows maybe in another 2 weeks I can drop to 24 seconds!!  It was fun none-the-less.

The wind kept me most of the night, so I was a little groggy getting up.  Did an early morning swim, it actually felt pretty good other than the bubble about blowing off the pool.  Did a pyramid set 400,300,200,100,50,100,200,300,400.  The goal was to keep the pace around 1:20 per 100, and I managed to do that.  I am anxious to get back on the run, but I still think it is going to be several more weeks.  3000 yards total.

Approximately 2000 yards in the pool.  Ok swim.  Met with a new ankle and foot specialist today, nothing really that new to report.  He could not offer a good solution to solve the underlying issues.  This may ultimately lead to an end to my running, but I remain somewhat hopeful that with enough mobility work and alternative therapy I will get healthy.  The surgical option is not good, and really not possible because of the long recovery time and mandatory time off my feet.  Another piece to the puzzle, just not the fit I wanted.

Another 2000 yards in the pool. Swam another 800 for time today.  I wanted to see if I had improved from 2 weeks ago, I swam 10:50 - that was about 1 minute faster. I do not feel it was 100% effort, but I did swim hard.  I figure if I really wanted to get aggressive and train harder I could probably get really close to 9 minutes maybe a little under.  Who knows if I cannot run anytime soon, I may give it an effort.

The foot was good this morning, but I kept putting off the run and then ran out of time.  Probably a good thing, I am still sore from my solid 4 miles of running this week.  I managed 1500 yards in the pool with a timed 400 at 4:56, not blazing but I will take it.  My goal was to average 1:15 per hundred and I got 1:14.  With a little more time and a lot more yardage I could see some good gains, maybe!!

I had not checked your blog lately and am sorry to hear about your achilles trouble. This seems to be effecting many bloggers right now. I had mine flair up in November/December. But I pretty much quit running cold turkey when it started. I only took 3 weeks off and have not felt it for over a month now. Like you swimming helped the time pass by a little easier.

Get healed up soon!

Sorry to hear your foot is still giving you grief. I you pain med free or is this unmasked pain? I like the picture. I would love to go to Egyt someday. My sister went there in 2000 or 2001 I can't remember and loved it. Also, I would be all too sure on your location? I'm always wondering if I'm really there myself... :')

What time were you in City Creek?

From S browning on Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 11:14:48

We were up there around 4. The time varies greatly as to when we go, but usually in the afternoon. In regards to Egypt, don't let the media scare you, it is very safe there. The people are amazingly friendly and the risk to tourists is probably well below what it is here in the States. We never once felt like we were at risk - people are people everywhere you go - we all share humanity with one another. The places we have been, the people recognize government policy is not a reflection of the individual and everyone has been exceptionally warm and welcoming!

Well Quadra Ball suffered significant shrinkage today on the run. Ran City Creek and got caught in a blizzard at the top. I only half thought the weather would change before I started the run so I ran in shorts - can we say freezing appendages? I think the thawing out process was harder than the run! Overall felt pretty good, maybe because I was numb for the last half of the run.

On a side note, we realized that pop culture is not our forte. Michelle, Neal and I got our clocked cleaned at trivial pursuit - it may have to do with either Neal's outstanding Belgian Triple or Pilsner, but I doubt it. I can tell you this though, Neal makes a mean soup and great beer!!!!!!!  Thanks again WhiteCastle!!!

A great night's sleep and a day off, what a great combination.  Taha talked me into trying a 3 mile tempo this morning, I was opposed but decided maybe a few faster miles would be ok.  I was thinking more along the lines of a tinman tempo pace.  Splits were 6:14, 6:24, 6:22.  None of the miles felt very hard, but I also don't think I could have been going too much faster.  At this rate I might actually be able to break the 75-79 age group record at St. George this year.  Look out John Cahill, I am on the hunt!

The foot was not a happy camper this morning upon rising , but it got better as the day went on.  Originally I thought I would take the day off, but then!!!!!!>>> My vibram five fingers arrived.  Inspired partially by Sasha and the Crocs, I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair.  I have been researching them for a while and was afraid to pull the trigger, but I figured I have nothing to lose at this point.  I have been battling my injury for six years, last year being the first year of actually being able to compete for the entire season.  I attributed much of that to switching to a more minimalist shoe, the Nike Free.  I experimented  with some barefoot running but was afraid of stepping on something, but what little I did I really liked.

So tonight I ran the first .5 miles in the VFF, .5 in my frees, and the last mile in the VFF.  The pavement was not so comfortable, but the grass, man that was great.  I will try to increase my usage of the VFF, but unlike Sasha it will be a gradual adaptation.  The foot actually felt very good after tonight's run, I will continue to report on my experience with VFF.

I will count the two miles even though they were hiking, but they were hiking in my VFF's!!!  It was really a a lot of fun, but my feet are a little stone bruised.  The injured paw is not doing to well and I am having to rethink my strategy for the year, I feel I am going to have to invest significant time cross training and trying to find a way to fix this problem.  The interval set on Tuesday has set me back significantly as I was afraid that it would.  I need to listen better to what my body is telling me.  Got 1600 in the pool and pushed pretty aggressively, especially on the kick sets.

just one more step to finish the race

just one more mile to keep the pace

just one more race to be the best

just one more time to be like the rest

just one more stroke in the swimming pool

just one fad to to follow to be cool

just one second to the end

just one more hope around the next bend

just one more minute to gaze into lover's eyes

just one more time listening to the lies

just one more belief to live by

just one more dream of being able to fly

just one more kiss after the date

just one more good-bye when the night hour's late

just one more friend for us to make

just one more morning after to wake

just one more tear to shed

just one more reason to miss the dead

just one more complaint about living

just one more Christmas full of giving

just one more day that seems so long

just one more year and where has the time gone

just one more fear of the unknown

just one more night being alone

just one more life that passes away

just one more memory of a special day

just one more sigh when remembering time thrown away

just one more future that seems so grey

just one more chance to live another way

Just remember to live it all today

Sorry about the loss of your best friend and running partner, Zima. Pet's become part of the family.

I am not a dog owner but I can feel your pain...I know it's been awhile now since I'm writing this in May. Are you doing okay?

From S Browning on Thu, May 08, 2008 at 23:46:13

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your kind thoughts. It has been a rough month, the feeling of loss has been profound, but we find peace in her memory and joy in the precious time we spent together.

From Lybi on Fri, May 16, 2008 at 23:07:31

Oh Scott! I'm so sorry for the loss of Zima! I hope she didn't have to suffer.

Are you doing any better? I hope you are still running. Drop us a line and let us know what you are up to!

You gotta love Pipeline this time of year.  It was a great evening run through the mountains.  I did struggle with a little post Neal homebrew syndrome throughout the day, but it is always so worth it.  I watched the master at work making his homebrew, quite a process, might have to give it whirl at some point.

Ok, so it has been a while since I have posted.  The last couple months have been pretty rough emotionally and the running has been all but non existent.  After Zima passed away, by far one the most painful experiences I have been through, I found out my mom has breast cancer.  Although her prognosis is good it still rocks you a bit, especially since she is my only remaining parent.  In regards to running, my foot is not really a lot better, just good enough to allow me to run a few days per week.  I am aggressively rehabing it, but it just may not get better, at least according to the now 7 specialists I have seen.  I have spent some time riding my bike and a considerable amount of time swimming.  Actually my swimming is coming along great, I almost feel competent again!!

Today's run took me up millcreek to burch hollow, a good run for the soul.  It was beautiful despite almost being killed by about 10 different mountain bikers.

Made an attempt in the pool to swim a fast 50 and then a fast 100.  No dive, just a push from the wall.  The 50 was fair at 26 seconds, the 100 not so good at 61.  Not sure I gave enough recovery between the 2.  I would have hoped for a sub 60, but I will try again soon.

Your ears must have been burning. Jed and I were talking about you on the run today. I'm glad your back and I'm sorry you've been going through so much. Between the loss of a good friend and the fear of losing a parent some time to think was probably the best. Hope to see you out there and I hope everything continues to improve.

Well, I have a rock solid week going.  My work schedule has been brutal as of late and I have been pretty cooked.  As summer gets rolling it should get better.  Ran pipeline in the pouring ran with Michelle.  What a blast - mud and rain, some low clouds, truly amazing.  I finished covered in mud with a big smile on my face - at one with nature!!!!!!  Best run this year!

I think I am close to changing my name from QuadraBall to TriBall, the right foot is essentially normal -essentially.  I would actually have to run faster and farther than a turtle to find out, but hey, I can walk pain free and run pain free on it.  The left side - not so much!!  Good days bad days with it, but at least I don't limp now and I can run at least an hour.  Ran Pipeline again today, other than the trail being torn up near Grandeur Peak, it was a great run.

Alright, after a non productive two days of not running, it was good to get out again.  One full evening repairing the swamp cooler, a worth while endeavor considering the heat.  I could swear I saw Adam run by the house as I was standing on the roof looking for the hose, he must of thought I was an idiot because Michelle was standing on the other side of the house on the ladder trying to hand it to me.

Anyway, the run was great, I felt good and all was right with my universe this evening.  For an added note, I also swam for an hour this morning, it was so early I almost thought it was yesterday!

Kim has watched it a couple of times by the bathroom above the burch hollow parking lot. She saw the cow too. I saw your comment it is scary being the last one out of there. I need to start earlier, but I do like the cooler temps. I have started to run up the road a little more than a mile and open up on the way back down, not to hard, but it sure finishes up the runs up there nicely. You should try it, it feels completely different from the trail. Using the different muscle group while already tired is a nice feel. See ya on the trail, or call we might be able to start at the same time.

Sad but true, I have already passed last weeks mileage!!  Generally fatigued this evening, but slothed through avoiding the 27000 cyclists, hikers, dogs and other assorted forms of exercisers.  I would like to know how the body knows the exact distance it can go before there is no way to get back to the porta potty?  Nothing like being on a busy trail with no outlets!!!!

Thanks. It's actually a matter of getting used to listening to something while I run. I actually have two different "systems" CD/computer based. It is a matter of finding the time but if I combine running and the lessons... As you know it is a good plan.

I have debated for a long time as to start writing in the blog again, but here I am.  Running has been pretty hit and miss lately.  The left foot is not doing very well and continues to bother me on a daily basis.  I remain hopeful it will eventually heal, the right one has, but so far the left, it is not looking good, and there is consensus among the doctors I have seen that this may or may not ever get better.  Surgery remains an option, but the risk is exceptional and would likely end any future running, so here I am hanging on the edge left with just hope and a sincere determination to find away to get healthy.  I think it is important for me to document my journey and just maybe I can see some light...

4 miles on the treadmill  - ran the last 3 miles at a comfortable 6:48 pace.  The treadmill has become my friend lately, it has given me the chance to bail on a run in the case my foot becomes too painful.  I have had to find a way to walk back on several runs outdoors.  The treadmill at least keeps me honest and I can push the pace as hard as I want, I will likely continue on it for the foreseeable future.

Actually got outside to run today, it was beautiful.  Ran up in the trails at Red Butte, what a shame to see the new Museum of Natural History being built there.  Nothing like destroying natural habitat to build a museum honoring it.  I actually fought against the site selection, but it was clear right from the start that this building was coming - there were just so many better places.  We should all enjoy the trail system while it lasts, between the new museum, Heritage park, and the zoo the trails will soon be a thing of the past.

Anywho.... the run was great, foot was fair and overall a good experience.

This is the first day I have felt good enough to venture out, but I am still feeling weak and hacking up a lung.  Felt ok as far as the run goes, but man was I weak.
